Historic Southern Pines building could be saved

An aging Southern Pines Building could be saved from destruction if it is found to be struicturally sound. Historic significance, yet to be determined, could also play a role in its preservation. The ubilding, in the 1200 block of west Pennsylvania Avenue, was an eyesore until recently when volunteers removed a decaying wooden section of the building and cleaned up the property. In the meantime, town council members have agreed to put off a decision until they have an up-to-date report, due next month. Councilman Chris Smithson says quick action, one way orthe other, should follow the report. "I think we have waited far too long to act on this blight on the neighborhood," he says.
