Battle begins for extra hospital beds in Hoke

Not so fast. The Cape Fear Valley Health System says it too plans to seek permission for 28 additional hospital beds in the Hoke-Cumberland County Planning District. Cape Fear headquarters are in Fayetteville. Earlier this week Pinehurst-based Firsthealth Of the Carolinas announced its intention to add 28 beds to the eight-bed Hoke Community Hospital it is building in Raeford. Both initiatives are in response to a state division of health services directive. This latest completion comes just weeks after the two health care systems settled longstanding differences after a standoff over mutually destructive appeals. The health systems had submitted competing applications ot build hospitals to serve Hoke County. Both applications were eventually granted and the latest dustup won’t interfere with that. The new hospitals will be within two miles of each other. Cape Fear says it doesn’t know where it would put 28 more beds.
