Fort Bragg dedicates statue to Southern Pines hero

Fort Bragg today is dedicating a statue commemorating an historic meeting n 1961 between Brigadier General Bill Yarborough and President John Kennedy. Yarborough, honored as the father of the elite special forces, lived in Southern Pines until his death at the age of 93. During a visit by President Kennedy to Fort Bragg in 1961, he was said to have admired the green berets owrn by Yarborough’s men. “Nice Headgear, Soldier,” Kennedy reportedly said. “it’s not authorized, sir,” Yarborough is said to have replied. “It is now,’ said The Commander-In –Chief. From that day on special forces soldiers have proudly worn the green beret.
