Moore County opposes Route 1 bypass
Moore County is now on record opposing a Route 1 Bypass. County Commissioners this week voted unanimously to adopt a resolution opposing any initiative advanced by the state department of transportation to carve out an alternative route around Southern Pines and Aberdeen. The new highway would permanently scar some of the most valuable real estate in Moore County. Board Chairman nick Picerno encouraged those opposing the bypass to stay vigilant and to keep the pressure on state officials to abandon the idea. As envisioned, the bypass, the bypass route cuts through Walthour-Moss Foundation Lands and adjacent horse country. ‘We believe a bypass through horse country is a bad thing,” said Picerno. Adding, “you’re going to have to continue to speak out against it.” County Commissioners by themselves, according to Picerno, have little influence with the department of transportation. Those attending the public hearing were almost unanimously opposed to a bypass.
