Two airmen with local ties die in copter crash

Two Airman with ties to Moore County were among the 30 service members who died when the helicopter they were riding in was brought down in Afghanistan by enemy ground fire. Tech sergeant John Brown lived in Pinehurst with his wife, while Staff Sergeant Andy Harvell and his wife lived in southern Pines. Both were stationed at Fort Bragg’s Pope Air Force Base. Sergeant Brown was a Pararescueman with the Air Force Special Operations Command. Sergeant Harvell was a combat controller who coordinated air support with troops on the ground. The airmen were part of a team that included Navy Seals.
