A well-travelled retired airline pilot from Vass embarked on a volunteer odyssey that will take him to the four corners of the world.
Sid Scruggs is the new president of Lions Club International, the largest service organization in the world with one-point-four million members in 206 countries.
Sid and his wife of 50-years, Judy, moved to the Woodlake Country Club 22 years ago, while he was still flying for American Airlines out of Raleigh.
Four years later he joined the Vass Lions Club.
Since then Sid’s rise within the Lion’s Organization has been rapid.
This month Scrugg’s was elected and installed as President at the vast volunteer organization at the 93rd Lions Club International Convention in Sydney, Australia.
Overlapping that high honor were visits to nine countries.
In the next 12 months Scrugg’s and, yes, his wife Judy fully expect to be on the road about 300 days, adding to the 40 countries he has already visited in various capacities as a Lion’s Representative.
The Scrugg’s have four grown children. One, Kevin, is a Baptist Minister living in California.
Two married daughters live in Athens, Georgia, and Derry, New Hampshire.
Lions International which started out in the United States caring for the visually impaired, has, according to Scruggs, has added the environment and Habitat For Humanity to its mission.
