This week Moore County Schools became only the second system in the state to give its resource officers complete police authority over public roads or highways.
For more than a decade Moore County Schools had their own uniformed officers and squad cars, but their police authority ended at the property line.
Henceforth, thanks to legislation that passed the general assembly, Campus Police now possess authority over public roads and highways that through or immediately adjoin school property.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg is the only other school in the state so designated.
Until 1999, Moore County Schools paid sheriff’s deputies to patrol the hallways and parking lots.
Eleven years ago school officials decided to form their own police department under the same law that permits private companies to offer police protection.
