Pinehurst Police believe they have broken up a ring
of thieves
who specialized in swiping valuable golf equipment and then unloading it
on the
used-club market.
Add the names of Vass Residents 24-year-old Matthew
Crane
and 23-year-old Nicole Russell to that of 21-year-old Kevin Gallagher
and
27-year-old Zachery Laird and you have the people police believe engaged
in
stealing stuff from eight different golf courses.
Authorities say others may be involved.
Southern Pines Cops broke the case open last week
when they
discovered ten golf bags, clubs and golf related items stashed in an
unoccupied
Tanglewood Apartment off Midland Road.
The apartment also yielded drugs and paraphernaiia.
Pinehurst Police put out the word that on two
separate occasions
last month thieves had stolen four bags, clubs and valuable personal
items from
two unattended golf carts at Pinehurst Country Club.
A tip sent police looking for Gallagher and Laird, a
Former
Pinehurst Caddy.
Their arrest was followed this week by the
apprehension of
two other suspects, Crane and Russell.
What surprised police was the distance the band
covered looking
for opportunities.
It turns out that not only was the Pinehurst
Country Club
targeted, but so was Hyland Hills on Route 1 and golf clubs in Durham,
Cary,
Raeford and Myrtle Beach.
