Moore County Animal Control Officers this week removed more than 20 underfed dogs from a rubbish-filled home within sight of the gated golf community of Seven Lakes West.
When representatives of animal control and the humane society arrived a the home off Lucas Road they encountered squalid conditions described by neighbors as fit for neither man nor beast.
Stan Boley complained “we can’t even sit on our patio in the summertime because of the dogs barking and the smell.”
County Officials describe the home, occupied by Paul Ownby and his ailing sister, as “deplorable.”
Nevertheless, Animal Control Officer Bryant Voss was sympathetic.
Owenby, he says, ended up with the dogs because they were left behind by family members who moved away.
“He’s simply overwhelmed” says Voss. “It’s like, “I can’t do it anymore. I need help.”
